Resource Summary
This independent evaluation by the University of Lancashire examines Lancashire Women’s Reducing Recalls Project, which provides intensive, gender‑responsive support to women repeatedly recalled to custody. The findings show that most recalls stem from structural barriers – homelessness, poverty, trauma, mental ill health, substance use and fragmented support – rather than new offending. Women valued consistent, practical, trauma‑informed support and continuity from custody into the community. The project demonstrates improved engagement, better accommodation outcomes and reduced repeat recalls.
