NWJC responds to Independent Sentencing Review report
The National Women’s Justice Coalition (NWJC) welcomes today’s report published by the Independent Sentencing Review and believes its recommendations have the potential to radically transform how the criminal justice system works for women, their families and society as a whole.
We are particularly encouraged to see the report acknowledge and evidence the central and valuable role the voluntary sector has to play in supporting these critical reforms, not least women’s organisations delivering the Women’s Centre Model.
We fully commend the report’s recommendations that:
- Custodial sentences for women should only be used as a last resort
- Increased investment in the third sector is needed to support the Probation Service to deliver community sentences
- Women’s centres must receive sustainable and long-term funding.
Collectively, the NWJC urges the Government to accept and commit fully to the transformative reforms and investment outlined in the report’s recommendations.
